Port Chester police broke up a fight involving eight to ten people, several armed with machetes, at the MTA's Waterfront Place garage Tuesday night. Officers recovered the weapons before handing suspects to MTA Police, which has since made six arrests. Rye and Rye Brook officers helped secure the scene. No gang connection has been confirmed, officials say.

I know this isn't a funny story, but I couldn't help myself when I saw the headline: machetes in a parking garage is next-level scary. Luckily, police got there fast and were able to contain the damage.

Deputy Chief James Bonney retired from the Greenwich Police Department this week, capping a career that began when he was sworn in as a patrol officer on Sept. 18, 1990. He made sergeant in 1999, patrol lieutenant in 2012, captain in 2020, and deputy chief last year, working his way through nearly every division the department has.

Along the way he managed the buildout of the town's new Emergency Dispatch Center, wrote grants that helped the department get its first drone, and became its go-to Honor Guard bagpiper for community events. In 2002, he was named Officer of the Year for swimming out to an unresponsive boater, towing the boat to shore, and administering CPR until paramedics arrived. "Solid career, great guy, and even better person," First Selectman Fred Camillo wrote on Facebook. "Best of luck in the new role, Chief, and thank you!"

Rye's Garnets picked up where last year's record-setting season left off, routing Cornwall 39-21 in Friday's opener at Nugent Stadium, a rematch of last year's state semifinal. New starting quarterback Charlie Brady, stepping in for a graduating class that sent 33 players to college programs, rushed for five touchdowns in his varsity debut.

The win pushed Rye's streak to 15 straight games, dating back to a season that produced four state championships and the program's first-ever Kerr Cup as New York's top athletic program. Girls soccer opens its own title defense this weekend under captain Charlotte Keenan. Fifteen wins and counting!

Harrison Police announced the arrests Wednesday of two people accused of stealing thousands of dollars in tools from construction sites and homes under construction around town. Investigators say Jose Hernandez-Done, 36, of Yonkers, and Mercedes Yudelka Morgan, 40, of Hackensack, N.J., forced their way into storage containers in Purchase overnight on Aug. 13 and 14, then came back Sept. 5 to target two homes under construction elsewhere in Harrison.

The pair was tracked down with help from the Greenburgh Task Force, Westchester's Real Time Crime Center, and Greenwich police. Both face multiple burglary and grand larceny charges and were arraigned Sunday.

Rye Brook's Building Department went fully online this month, letting residents file and track permit applications without a trip to Village Hall. Officials say it's the first step toward digitizing more of the village's services.

Metro-North and Amtrak are running modified weekend schedules Sept. 12-13 to support cable removal for the WALK Bridge replacement in Norwalk. Greenwich and Rye commuters should expect reduced service both days.

Foreigner's 50th anniversary tour is headed to Port Chester's Capitol Theatre. Details on dates are still trickling out, but classic-rock fans are already circling their calendars.

Purchase Elementary marked the first day of kindergarten with its annual "Boo Hoo Breakfast," giving Harrison parents a chance to commiserate over coffee while their kids started the school year down the hall.

The building at 253 Greenwich Ave. dates to 1915, built as the Putnam Trust Co. with double-height ceilings and archways that have outlasted several restaurant tenants since. Restaurateur K Dong, whose other Greenwich Avenue spots include Miku and Hinoki, partnered with Chef Steven Chen to turn the space into Moli, styling the dining room after 1940s Shanghai and the film In the Mood for Love, with velvet drapes, a hand-assembled 2,000-piece crystal chandelier, and antique Chinese ceramics.

The kitchen, led by Chef Luis Parreira, turns out soup dumplings in four styles, Peking duck roasted daily and carved tableside, and dishes like Shacha chicken that lean closer to yellow curry than classic satay. Bar Moli runs its own late-night menu and a cocktail program built around rare Japanese whiskeys.

Worth knowing: Moli is open Sunday through Thursday, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Friday-Saturday until 1 a.m., at 253 Greenwich Ave. Reservations available via OpenTable.

Every September, the Marshlands Conservancy quietly turns into one of the busiest rest stops on the East Coast. The 147-acre preserve's salt marsh, a habitat vanishing elsewhere along the Sound to development and rising water, still pulls in greater yellowlegs and semipalmated sandpipers by the thousands as they push south for the winter.

The forested uplands do their own version of the same trick. Scarlet tanagers, Baltimore orioles, and black-and-white warblers pass through by the dozens some mornings, resting before the next leg of a journey that can run thousands of miles. Birders watch for the saltmarsh sparrow especially, a species in real decline that still turns up here often enough to matter.

None of it requires a plane ticket or even much of a walk. Fall migration through November means the Marshlands, and its sister sanctuary Edith G. Read, are doing more work per acre this month than almost any other patch of ground in the city. Most residents will drive past without knowing it's happening.
